Roger Smith, Long-Time Member of the ISG, Passes

We at the ISG are saddened to announce that our dear friend and long-time member, Roger Smith, died Nov. 28, 2022. Roger served in multiple roles at the ISG over many years, including vice president, board member, and juror for the Lemkin Book Award. He was an early pioneer of genocide studies and played an important role in the work of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, including helping host its first conference at the College of William and Mary, where he was on the faculty of the Government Department. Roger was also on the board of the Zoryan Institute and director of the Zoryan's Genocide and Human Rights Program, held at the University of Toronto.

He was a committed scholar and human rights activist, giving many talks on the Armenian genocide and genocidal denial, as well as on the distinctively gendered aspects of genocide and mass atrocities.

We miss our dear friend Roger, whose sense of humor, wisdom, and unfailing commitment to justice were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
